Along with SXSW MUSIC’s hundreds of shows, the 7-day festival is popular for its signature panels covering a variety of music topics from industry experts. Unlike shows, however, the only way into these notable panels is with an official SXSW badge; which can have a price tag up to $1250.00. Knowing great information is priceless, Chicago-based consulting firm Urban Fetes challenged the SXSW norms by opening up Peckerheads for a free industry panel open to anyone looking to get some knowledge.
Sponsored by AKOO, UF’s panel brought Jason Reddick (Hot 107.9), Amir Boyd (Culture Republic/Hustle Gang), Gray Rizzy(Shade45), Hustle Simmons(Watershed Agency) and VLive(Road Manager for MetroBoomin) to address some of the music industry’s hottest topics.
With over a collective two decades in the music business, the panelists answered moderator Drea O’s questions with transparency as the packed Peckerhead’s crowd hung on to their every word. Teaching rising stars how to secure the bag the right way, with their insightful discussion offered the following advice to artists on the rise:
ABOUT GETTING ON THE RADIO:
“The best thing you could do to get on the radio is get hot in the streets first”- Jason Reddick
ABOUT BUILDING A TEAM:
“Surround yourself with people that do know [the music business] and want to know”- Gray Rizzy
ABOUT NEEDING A RECORD DEAL:
“The term independent needs to be redefined. There’s nothing wrong with signing a deal… it’s all about leverage”- Amir Boyd
“Use SXSW for practice. Perfect your live show…so when your moment comes you’re ready.”- Hustle Simmons
“I started out driving the bus for Metro Boomin. I was young and they saw I was smart and they brought me on as tour manager…anything is possible.”- VLive
As if the existing gems weren’t enough, a surprise appearance from 6x Grammy-award winning Malik Yusuf left the audience with a simple 3-step formula for success.
“Thought Action and Team”- Malik Yusef
That initial thought has actionable steps that your team who sees the vision you may not, will execute.
With execution this good, we predict Urban Fetes will be back at SXSW next year and rapidly make it to everyone’s “must attend” list.
