A few weeks ago we shared “Bad Blood“, NAO‘s first song off her upcoming, untitled project, and now after dropping the second, a video for “Fool To Love” came out yesterday. Following the trend of mysteriousness and creative storytelling, it is a very condensed narrative starring Ashley Walters from the British show “Tom Boy“.
Directed by Ollie Wolfe, it’s a hypervisual of the song, toned in browns and oranges. As a man is seemingly fighting against an unseen adversary which comes along at the most unexpected times. Perhaps even love itself? Digging a little deeper I picked at one scene where the character began sipping a drink and was suddenly attacked, was this a metaphorical tea spilling and ensuring fight? Maybe the force is invisible because it’s a reflection of self? The warm tones to counter the struggle taking place? Maybe I overthought it, but it’s that sort of fun that a video like this allows you to have. Some of the effects drove home the increasing seriousness of the encounters, kept me guessing what was going to happen and many visuals don’t paint that picture well.
NAO, outside of sliding out visuals, has also been on tour and has added more dates so be sure to check that out.
After watching you can read, in her own words, her inspiration behind the video as per her Vevo account:
Hey. To help make sense of this video I thought I might explain it’s a song I wrote to myself and my self-doubt, not a song to a lover. I was a fool to listen to that voice in my head that held me back. I’m my own worst enemy sometimes and that’s the theme that Ashley took on so well x
