Smino spotlights an increase in Black Oscar nominations with new single.
As Black History Month comes to a close, celebrations of African American culture are still as prevalent as they were on February 1st. Narratives of being Black and proud are trending across Twitter and mainstream networks as we empower a community through our various mediums of art. Contributing to the narrative is St. Louis rising star Smino, with his newest single, “Blkoscars”.
Featuring an introduction by fellow Zero Fatigue member Jay2, Smino flexes over production by frequent collaborator Monte Booker. Walking us through an all Black party, the trio celebrate a record-tying six Black actors nominated for the upcoming Oscar awards; an uptick from last year’s #OscarsSoWhite uproar. In addition to the emcee’s signature perplexing flow, “Blkoscars” (which follows his ode to Black Women “Anita”) is filled with “run that back” bars that make it difficult to take the song off repeat.
As we await the release of his upcoming album BlkSwan, listen to Smino’s timely new single “Blkoscars” below.
